What could your story outline be?
Just read a story in Yahoo News today. About a Postcard From Montana that reached Ohio after a lapse of 47 years.
Seemed a traveler friend named Frances mailed it to her friend Marion in Ohio, and says “havin a good time”. Both the sender and recepient were long dead when the postcard reached Ohio.
But that is not what I’m asking. What I want to know is how would you make this incident as the base of a story? The names and places seemed to me a good start for a story plot. Like in “Bridges of Madison County”.
Who would Frances be in your story? Who Marion? And what could the significance of that lost postcard be in their story?
I would give you a spin-off storyline. It just so happens that Marion has a son, Mark, now a New Yorker in his mid-30s, unmarried, and has vowed to trace the family of Frances in Montana. His journey would take him from New York to Montana, to Tennessee, and finally to Texas. In a span of 8 months, he found Darlene, youngest daughter of Frances. Despite the 10-year age gap, they fell in love. One day in Spring, Mark was sent by his company to Timbuktu. What was supposed to be a one-week assignment turned to one year. One week in Timbuktu is horrible; one year is pure hell. With no communication for one full year, the lovers were stricken with grief and loneliness. But Mark was determined to send word to Darlene. He fund his answer in a pigeon that he found badly bruised along the
shore. He nursed the pigeon back to health and trained him in the
intricate art of mail delivery.
Finally, the pigeon was well enough to embark on his task. Took him countless months to reach Texas. At long long last a message was received by Darlene. The pigeon arrived just as Darlene’s casket was being lowered on the ground. Mark’s message would be read in Heaven.
Proposed title of my story – “The Pigeon Did It!”
